What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Diabetes is caused due to excessive glucose content in the blood, also known as high blood sugar or hyperglycemia. Glucose is the main source of energy for the body’s cells. The increase in blood sugar releases insulin from the pancreas into the bloodstream. Diabetes is described as a metabolic disease in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because the insulin production is inadequate, or because the body’s cells do not respond properly to the produced insulin, or in some cases, both.
In simple words diabetes is a disease in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates and elevated levels of glucose in the blood.
There are 3 major types of diabetes:
● Type 1 Diabetes
● Type 2 Diabetes and
● Gestational Diabetes
When left untreated, diabetes can result in the development of a wide range of side effects and other diseases such as:
● Foot Ulcers
● Cardiovascular Disease
● Vision Impairment
● Gum Disease
● Fatigue
● Stroke
● Nerve Damage and more.
